From onboarding to your first field shift, here’s what to expect when you join our team.

1. The Hiring Process

How to Join Westmed

Step 1: Apply Online – Submit once you’ve received your NREMT.
Step 2: Application Review – We look for open availability and consistent work history.
Step 3: Interview – In-person meeting with our staffing team.
Step 4: Documentation & Clearance – Upload your certifications, complete medical screenings, and you’re cleared for orientation.

What You'll Need​

  • California State EMT/Medic Card

  • Valid California Driver's License

  • Ambulance Driver Certification

  • Valid Medical Examiner Card

  • Current CPR Certification

  • 1 years as a licensed driver (Class C) or 1 year experience as a licensed Ambulance driver

  • Clean driving record within 3 years (no points, no citations and no accidents listed)

2. Orientation

Setting You Up For Success

Our one week orientation combines classroom learning with hands-on skill refreshers to get you ready for the field, such as:

  • EVOC driving and safety training

  • Clinical skills: LMA insertion, IM injection, gurney operations and more

  • Uniform fitting and paperwork/compliance training

  • County-specific procedures (Alameda & Santa Clara)

3. Field Training

Learn From Experience

After orientation, you’ll spend 2 weeks in the field with a Field Training Specialist (FTS) who matches your schedule. You’ll learn how to manage calls, handle patient reports, and navigate Westmed’s field systems.

5. Growth At Westmed

Grow With Us

EMTs at Westmed build a strong foundation in EMS while growing into new responsibilities and roles within the company. After 6 months at Westmed, you can grow into roles such as:

Field Training Specialist​

Field Training Specialists help new EMTs and Paramedics transition from the classroom to real-world patient care. They provide hands-on guidance, mentorship, and feedback to ensure every EMT meets Westmed’s standards for safety, professionalism, and compassionate service. Acting as both teachers and role models, FTS team members play a key role in shaping the next generation of Westmed field providers​​.

Clinical Training Specialist 

Clinical Training Specialists support the ongoing education and clinical development of Westmed’s field staff. They help team members stay current with certifications, strengthen patient care skills, and maintain high clinical standards. Clinical Training Specialist team members also contribute to training and mentorship, supporting Westmed’s overall commitment to consistent, high-quality patient care.

Shift Supervisor

Shift Supervisors support Westmed’s field crews by helping keep daily operations running smoothly. They serve as a resource for EMTs throughout their shift, assist with problem-solving in the field, and help ensure vehicles and equipment are ready for service. Shift Supervisors also provide mentorship, help reinforce safety and documentation standards, and promote a positive, supportive work environment for the team.

Skills Instructor at BATA

Skills Instructors at the Bay Area Training Academy help teach and guide future EMTs as they learn essential hands-on skills. They support students through training, coaching, and practical skill development while promoting safe and accurate learning practices. BATA instructors play an important role in preparing new providers for the field and contributing to the overall quality of EMS education.
